It's long past time to stop giving this administration any benefit of the doubt. Just because they use words like "efficiency" doesn't mean their actions will have anything to do with those words.
They're cutting agency staff for two reasons:
1. They view career civil servants as inherently left-leaning and therefore their enemy;
2. With fewer people, the agencies can't disburse funds as actively, which is a backup solution if the courts ever permanently enjoin all of the impoundment currently happening.
That's it. They just want to tear things down and consolidate power. There are no good intentions here.
Agreed that nascent scientists should not be the sacrifice.
The “but” is how does one identify the real waste gobbled up within large bureaucracies/mini-governments, and get rid of bureaucratic wasters who bring NO value to the table other than shuffling the largesse provided by the Government.
There is no greater truism than recognizing the conundrum in the current healthcare system, where there is an exact inverse relationship between “essential” tasks and (low) “essential pay”, and non-essential administrative tasks associated with the highest pay scales.
Those who have sifted through the ranks to rise have not done so on the basis of meritorious value to the system.
In fact, many of them have done so by deceit and entitled executive fiat, not intrinsic value. That’s where the true waste, and continued waste lies.

Hi Stuart Buck, I really enjoyed your article and look forward to more conversations with you.
