Hello world!
This is the Substack newsletter for the Good Science Project. I intend to publish occasional newsletters summarizing the Good Science Project’s activities and publications, along with additional thoughts. Why Substack? It seems to be a far better way to handle email subscriptions and recommendations than anything else I’ve seen.
Much more to come in the future. For now, check out a STAT piece from today on a Congressional letter demanding that NIH explain why an advisory board mandated by the NIH Reform Act of 2006 hasn’t been doing much of anything. The 2006 law created a key mechanism for the NIH to regularly consider how it is performing, and whether and how to restructure its activities. Yet that mechanism has been woefully underused. I’ve been working with Brookings and the Institute for Progress to organize a small convening this fall on this precise issue, hoping to stimulate more discussion about how NIH can best fulfill its mission.
Best,

Excited for upcoming editions! I've been encouraged and intrigued by the rise of focused research organizations (FROs) to tackle challenges in academia in startup-like teams. Seems like an innovative solution to accelerate research with specific aims.
